Who's Paola Poletto?

Paola is a mixed media artist and arts administrator. Currently, she is Research Director at Design Exchange, Canada's national centre for design. She is also the director of digifest, an annual international festival of digital culture and design produced by Design Exchange in partnership with the Ontario Science Centre and Harbourfront Centre.

Between 2000 and 2004, her artist-led projects and exhibitions have appeared through Kiss Machine Magazine, and have included the Inflatable Museum, Girls and Guns, the Secrets Room, and Robot Landscapes. In 2003 and 2004, Paola travelled with the Girls and Guns project from the magazine pages to gallery spaces in Toronto, London-Ontario, Budapest, Tirana and Novi Sad. But the best trip has been with Emily, making Kiss Machine.

What Paola Thinks About Kiss Machine

A viewer determines a unique and individualized mapping of visual elements, so that they and their intricacies cannot be rendered from only one position or perspective. Paola is interested in how the act of viewing an object literally moves the viewer in and out of tenses (i.e. alternating the magazine as a whole and what gets framed within) or suggests a constant shifting in a narrative sense (i.e. "can you see it?" shifts to "did you see it?" and even to "I can't bear to look at it any longer").
