Summer Ink is two months' worth of correspondence between long-time friends Golda Fried and Vesna Mostovac.
On these pages, sticky with tears, cigarette ash, beer, coffee, ketchup and bacon grease, they document their trials and tribulations in the world of love and heartbreak, paying close attention to the songs spinning in the background. Each letter comes alive with graphics Vesna has drawn and collaged, based on images present in the writers' minds as they wrote the letter.
Golda, living in Greensboro, North Carolina, has a new love named Artie, who brings her to a rock 'n' roll wedding, his dormlike room in the back of a house where plants go to die, and his mother's house. Vesna, living in Toronto's Parkdale neighbourhood, is newly single and trying to make sense of her past dating musicians as she hops from Parkdale's finest eateries to an art show to cottages on the weekends.
Both women are grateful for the friendship they have with each other, which helps them make sense of it all. Summer Ink is their second collaboration. In 1998, Vesna illustrated Golda's short story collection, Darkness Then A Blown Kiss (Gutter Press).

About Vesna Mostovac
Born in Terrace Bay, Ontario, Vesna is best known for her brainchild, Foolish Girl, established in 1995 in the underground comix and zine scene. Foolish Girl has appeared in publications such as Now, Exclaim!, Chart, Don't Touch Me and the Globe and Mail. In 2001, Vesna compiled and published Maow Maow: A Collection of Dreams, featuring work by her and thirteen other Canadian artists. CCI Entertainment approached Vesna with the idea of making Foolish Girl into a television series, and they have worked diligently to translate its spirit of urban, foible-ridden humour from print to animation. The pilot for the series aired on the CBC's Zed TV in the fall of 2005 and the series is currently in development. Vesna has extensive experience working in animation, including Mordecai Richler's Jacob Two-Two, and she is currently an assistant director on a pre-school series entitled Bruno and the Banana Bunch.
